Their file shares will work as long as they're not doing much more than copying stuff to their machine, working on it, then putting it back. If the Mac is going to work in isolation, that's great. Really, how much of a danger they pose is also heavily dependent on your regulatory and compliance needs. Since the person's been hired, and they've been promised the iMac, it sounds like it is too late for my warning. We've got ten Macs and yes, if I wanted to roll out settings akin to GPOs, map network shares automatically, etc., it all takes extra software that comes at a decent price tag. (Look into Acronis Access Connect to resolve this - ) Also be ready to do a lot of reading about how to do all these things. I highly recommend against mixed environments unless you're ready to pay for managment tools. I know this is going to be considered to be Mac bashing, but it isn't.
